The central nervous system of the body is in charge of vital bodily functions, such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, digestive and reproductive systems. Our organs can only function as well as they are being regulated. Our nervous sysytem—autonomic nervous system– is comprised of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The first prepares the body for action (a little like the accelerator pedal), particularly in a fight or flight situation and when we need increased energy. It controls our response to threat, survival, protection, and stress. The second is like the brake pedal and calms us down. It comes into play when resting, controls digestion, relaxation, growth and development.
When they are both in balance, we cope well with the ups and downs of life. If, however, we experience prolonged periods of chronic stress and/or trauma, the balance is interrupted and the system can get stuck in a high state of stress, causing symptoms such as high blood pressure, anxiety, panic attacks, heart disease, stroke, poor sleep, type 1 diabetes etc. The opposite can happen that constant states of high bodily stress and arousal causes the nervous system to freeze in a way and stops us functioning well. This manifests in symptoms such as depression, low blood pressure, dizziness, weight gain, chronic fatigue, diarrhoea, disconnection etc.
Sound healing can be very effective in helping to identify which system is out of balance and address this using a variety of instruments.
