Nothing is truly static, even if it appears that way. There is always energy propagating throughout the earth. Everything holds and/or emits a resonate frequency. Whether that’s a rock (40-50Hz) , visible light and a colour (480THz-750THz depending on the colour) a tree, plants, animals, humans, even into individual organs within the human body, tissue, blood and cells. They have all be found to vibrate at their own optimal, inherent frequency range. So when molecules are hit by sound waves close to their inherent frequency, they will begin to resonate and vibrate. If anything disrupts this natural state for long enough, such as prolonged stress, trauma, ill health can eventually result.
Sound therapy can assist the body to re-tune back to its normal, healthy function.
Sound is defined as a vibration that travels through a medium such as a air and water, as an audible, felt wave. It is measured using the unit Hertz (Hz). The vibration causes the medium around the wave to also vibrate.
If the wave reaches the human ear, it travels through the ear canal until it reaches the eardrum causing the three tiny bones (hammer, anvil, stirrup) behind it to also vibrate. It then travels much like an ocean wave would into the fluid in the Cochlea where it is transferred via hair cells picking up the different pitches (high to low etc) to the auditory nerve. This travels into our brains which then translate these signals into the sounds that we hear.
An adult body is made up of approximately 75% water. Cells contain about 60% of this and roughly one third of the remaining water surrounds the cells in whichever part of the body/organ the cells are. Some organs contain more water than others; the brain and kidneys containing the highest, bones and teeth the lowest.
As the sound therapy instruments are played on and around the body, the waves and vibrations produced travel down through cells in the layers of skin, into muscle tissue, organs, bones, lymph system, etc, causing the water within the cells of each to vibrate. This oscillation or resonance passes onto the molecules, causing alternating compressions and relaxation of cells - in effect, a sonic massage!
As cells compress, they can lose some fluid, usually containing waste products and toxins. As the pressure relaxes, the cells draw in fresh nutrients which start the healing process. Hormones within tissue are also stimulated by the vibrational effect and will improve blood flow to an area. This all promotes circulation, energy flow and rejuvenation.
Therapy instruments can be played by a knowledgeable and experienced practitioner in such a way that, using differing frequencies, techniques and rhythms, not only does the ear experience the sound waves, but the body too. The frequencies synchronise and alter brain states, activating a de-stress response, a body deeply relaxes and then further instruments and techniques are used according to what a client asks for in a therapy session, all to help restore the normal vibratory frequencies of the cells in our bodies.
Sound frequencies are already used in the medical profession in ever more developing ways. From simple, well-used practices such as the Stethoscope to listen to a heartbeat, tuning forks used on the feet of diabetic patients to assess any nerve damage, to more modern uses. For example, ultrasound is used as a safe way to image deep inside the body. Lithotripsy uses ultrasonic sound, or shockwaves, to directly break up kidney stones. Focused ultrasound can be used as an early stage, non-invasive therapeutic technology to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s Disease to prevent progression and/or restore function. Some research has been done into certain frequencies killing viruses. Research, such as that in The California Institute of Technology & the Instiutue of Cancer Research Royal Marsden Hospital outside of London, has started using high powered, low-intensity ultrasound beams to kill off harmful tissue in bone lesions and cancer cells, pulsing soundwaves at a frequency above 20,000 Hz at tumours...to name but a few.

Today, science is not only catching up with practices that were used effectively by ancient civilisations but is advancing it quickly and providing evidence of it’s effectiveness. It has been said that sound and vibrational energy is the future of medicine.
